In
May I travelled over to Holland with the West Midlands Police angling
section to compete in the European Police championships.
The
venues were advertised as having large patrolling shoals of big Bream. As a
result I contacted Martin at British worm breeders and he kindly gave me 3 x
100gm tubs of worm dust, to take with us to try out. Martin said that 'the
dust' had been tried and tested by Alan Scotthorne, who had some great
results, and also some local noted anglers had been catching some big
weights from places such as Preston Innovations Makin fisheries.
The
dust is made up from approximately 500gm of worm that is dried and then
ground down.
Martin
stated there are a number of ways to use it. You can mix it with water to
form a paste, sprinkle it over any hook bait, including casters and maggots
or mix it with your favourite groundbait, which is what we did.
The
theory is that 'the dust' absorbs as much water as it can and then gives off
an aroma that attracts fish. As worm is generally made up of eighty percent
of water, the theory proved correct, even to the extent that you could see
the stripes on the things reappear!
The
mixing instructions on the bottle are only a guideline and it pays to
experiment when mixing with groundbait as the lads did. In fact they added
double the recommended amount and still caught fish. I believe that the dust
certainly helped as the venues fished a lot harder than anticipated and
bream were hard to come by. I finished fourth in section on both days when
our continental friends were struggling to catch anything at all.
If
you are a worm fisherman it is something worth keeping with you in your bag.
If the fishing is hard and the fish are not looking for much food then this
stuff will undoubtedly help, as the fish can't feed on it as it washes
through their gills. They will then turn to your hook bait for something
more substantial to eat.
A number of tackle shops are now stocking the dust and it's retailing at £8.50
for a 100gm tub. If you do have difficulty getting hold of it you can
contact Martin and his team and they will gladly dispatch some to your door.
